Cody Lloyd Carmody, 24, was arrested Tuesday.
Johnston County deputies responded late Monday to Braswell Road in Smithfield for a report of an assault.
When they arrived, they found Joshua Biedekapp dead from his injuries.
Carmody is charged with first-degree murder.
