DUDLEY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Wayne County Sheriff's Office said three deputies were shot while serving involuntary commitment papers Monday morning prompting an hours-long standoff that ended Monday evening at a home in Dudley.

SWAT team members entered the home shortly before 8 p.m. and found the suspect dead inside of an "apparent fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound." He was identified as Jourdan Hamilton, 23.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Arrington Bridge Road near Emmaus Church Road, which is south of Goldsboro. The gunfire was "pretty instantaneous" as deputies approached the door, Wayne County Public Information Officer Joel Gillie said Monday evening.

Two of the deputies needed to be airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. The third deputy was initially being treated at Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro.

One deputy, Sgt. Matthew Fishman, was in critical condition Monday evening, Gillie said.

Corp. Andrew Cox and deputy Alexander Ramon Torres were described as stable. All three are now being treated in Greenville.

"Nobody expects to go into work and be shot at, but this is what our men and women do on a daily basis. It's unfortunate that this one turned out this way," Gillie said.

Investigators said they were unsure what sort of gun the suspect used or whether he had more firepower inside the home.

Hamilton, whom officials earlier said was 33 years old, barricaded himself inside the home where the deputies went to serve the papers. There was no one else inside the home, Gillie said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
