Man back in custody after escaping while being treated at WakeMed: Wake Co. Sheriff

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Wake County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that an inmate who escaped from custody while at WakeMed will face an upgraded charge of felony escape from jail.

Zaire Mclean, 23, who slipped away from the hospital on Tuesday night was back in custody as of 12:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The Raleigh Police Department and North Carolina State Highway Patrol assisted with the search. Investigators didn't reveal the exact location of where he was apprehended.

Mclean escaped around 8:30 p.m. at the hospital on New Bern Avenue, according to the sheriff's office. He was still wearing an orange jumpsuit and had handcuffs on when he slipped away from a detention officer.

Deputies searched the Milburnie Road area late Tuesday.

ABC11 saw drones in use, officers on the ground and helicopters overhead looking into wooded areas. Investigators did not say why Mclean was at the hospital but did mention that he was taken there Tuesday by ambulance.

Mclean has been in custody since Friday on a larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon charge. He is being held at the Wake County Detention Center without bond.

A heavy law enforcement presence was at the scene late into the night with officers on the ground, drones and helicopters joining in the search.



During the manhunt, people in the areas being searched were asked to stay inside, lock their doors, and call 911 if they saw or heard anything unusual.
