Officer shoots, kills person attacking them with a knife, Fairmont police chief says

LUMBERTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Fairmont police officer shot and killed a person who attacked them with a knife Monday night in Robeson County.

The incident happened at 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 41 and Highway 74 in Lumberton.

Fairmont Police Department said Arlette Christina Wiggins, 40, attacked Officer Denzel Armar Burney, 23, with a knife.

Burney, who has been a police officer for 15 months, was stabbed multiple times and had to be treated at a local hospital.

Chief Jon Edwards said Burney shot Wiggins in an attempt to stop the attack. Wiggins later died from the injuries.

The NC State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident, which is standard procedure.
