In a statement, the university said "Miss Bria Perkins is no longer serving as Miss Fayetteville State University. Fayetteville State University believes this is in the best interest of the university and its students."

Her removal prompted #bringbriaback on Twitter, as students asked why she was removed on Friday.
The university has said student privacy laws prohibit officials from commenting any further.

However, students gathered on campus Monday morning chanting, "Regain Bria!" and circulated a petition to reinstate Perkins.
According to a Miss FSU contract of responsibility, "the role of Miss Fayetteville State University is to serve as an ambassador for the University; portraying good moral and physical character to the campus and community."

"Miss Fayetteville State University is expected to, at all times, represent the University in a positive manner; expressing friendliness, concern and a willingness to help. She is to be a role model and mentor for her fellow students, and for area public school students with whom she may come in contact."
The contract also states that should Miss Fayetteville State University's status, as indicated on the application submitted to the Miss Fayetteville State University Scholarship Pageant Committee, change in any way or should there be a violation of any contestant guidelines, the crown will be removed and presented to the first runner-up.
