Ed Buchan with Raleigh Public Utilities has now told ABC11 the affected section will be shut down through at least Thursday morning - and possibly longer.
"The time-consuming part will start where we'll have to repave a fairly long section of Glenwood Avenue," Buchan said. "We'll also have to close one of the lanes in the westbound segment of Glenwood as well. So this is going to take a while to get this fixed."
The impacted area is close to Crabtree Valley Mall and the I-440 interchange. Major traffic delays were evident Monday at 8 a.m. when ABC11 crews got to the scene.

The city said the break has been isolated and crews will excavate to find the broken section of pipe and replace it. A nearby BP gas station and a stretch of hotels along the road don't have water service. Buchan said no residential customers are affected.
The mall and the surrounding area are often impacted by flooding from Crabtree Creek after heavy rains.
