Durham hazardous materials report

Durham police said they got a call just before noon from a landlord who said that his tenant had told him he had anthrax in his car and it might blow up.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Durham's Bio-Chemical Emergency Response Team (B-CERT) and the DCSO Bomb Squad checked the scene, including the car and the little house in the back (the apartment) and did not find any anthrax or hazardous materials.

The man who lives there, John Michael Oakley was being held for questioning. Though he wasn't charged in connection with the hazmat event, Durham Police said Oakley had outstanding warrants that were served on him while he was being detained.

Oakley was charged with one count of misdemeanor larceny and one count of unauthorized use of motor vehicle.

A woman who lives in the home and asked not to be named told ABC11, "Me and my fiancé were outside checking the fluids in our car and the cops showed up and walked us up the road and said somebody called in a hazardous threat."

Guess Road reopened shortly before 6:45 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
