Driver charged after high-speed chase, crash in Johnston County

CLAYTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A driver has been charged after leading police on a chase that reached speeds of up to 130 mph in Johnston County.

The pursuit ended with a crash in Johnston County on Wednesday just before 11 a.m.

It started when Selma Police tried to initiate a traffic stop on a white 2007 Toyota Camry and the driver fled, speeding as he traveled through Wilson's Mills and into Clayton.

While on US 70 Business westbound, he ran through a steady red light at Robertson Street and crashed into a white 2008 BMW 328I that was making a right turn onto US 70 from Robertson, police said.

Selma Police arrested the driver, Hassan Fiaz Gannaway, 20. He was charged by Clayton Police with failing to stop for steady red light and reckless driving to endanger.

High-speed chase ends with head-on crash in Johnston County


Selma Police and Wilson's Mills Police are still investigating, and Gannaway is expected to face additional charges.



The driver of the BMW, a 51-year-old woman, was taken to WakeMed for treatment of what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
