The crash happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. near Exit 17, Caton Road.
The interstate lanes are expected to be closed for hours, perhaps as late as 2 a.m.
Officials did not immediately say whether the crash was caused by the winter storm moving through eastern North Carolina.
