DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A fight led to a shooting at a McDonald's restaurant on North Miami Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon, according to Durham Police Department.

Durham officers responded to calls about the shooting shortly before 2:30 p.m. A preliminary investigation determined that a fight started inside the restaurant and continued into the parking lot. From there, someone pulled out a gun and opened fire.

East Durham residents said they're frustrated by all the recent violence in the neighborhood they call home.

"I never shot a gun a day in my life, but guess what? I'm forced to go get one. I got to protect myself," said Delphine Wilson, who lives not far from the McDonald's. She added she wants to see more done from the top down.

"Something has got to be done. If the mayor and the police captain can't do something to stop all this violence, they've got to get out of office," Wilson said. "Wait, actually you know what I want them to do? I actually want them to come and walk. Walk this beat, see how these people are hanging out."

Niki Cannady was walking with her 7-year-old daughter when the shots rang out.

"You could be at a stoplight and you just never know. And the sad part about it is I was born and raised here, and I never thought Durham will look like this," Cannady said.

The frustration is echoed by city officials. Mayor Pro Tem Mark-Anthony Middleton said it will be hard for Durham to capitalize on the good things it's doing if it doesn't get the gun violence issue under control.

"It's summertime," Middleton said. "We're outside doing things outside. All of the great things about Durham gets an asterisk next to it. It's a muted celebration until we stem this gun violence issue."
