Raleigh's Helping Hand Mission asking for donations after unprecedented low

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Raleigh's Helping Hand Mission is asking for a helping hand to bring holiday gifts to families in need this year.

There's just a few weeks to go before Christmas and mission director Sylvia Wiggins says they have more than 800 families in need. Right now they could only fill about 87 boxes with toys and clothing.

"We're in a hole right now," Wiggins said. "Just unprecedented low. The few things we're getting in, we've already got them committed with a family. We're wishing for pretty much anything."

Wiggins says more families are asking for help this year. The Mission is hoping for new items of toys and warm clothing for all ages and there is an especially great need for items for older children.

"We want someone to appreciate a child and what they feel like when they open up a present and it is as close to new," Wiggins said. "Preferably new, but we'll pretty much accept anything. We'll be going through the stuff and making sure it is something the child will appreciate," she said.

"They want something to go back to school and show their friends what they got," she added
