Storms bring heavy rain, winds through Triangle, rain expected to clear up overnight

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Severe storms drove heavy downpours, and damaging wind gusts through the Triangle on Wednesday. Though the threat moved on, there are a few patches of rain making there way through the area overnight.

Down in Cumberland County, where schools released students an hour early because of the severe-weather threat, rain began to intensify as darkness fell.

Some lightning was spotted in the area of Sampson and nearby counties along the North Carolina-South Carolina border spawned some tornado warnings late Wednesday evening.

The system brought initial spotty showers in the morning before the main front arrived in the area. Durham, for example, saw steady rainfall through the afternoon.



Areas like Wayne County saw up 2 inches of rain.

By 12:30 a.m., there will be a few scattered showers still around in the triangle and things should begin to clear out overnight into Thursday morning.
