NCSHP trooper taken to hospital for heat exhaustion; customer uses officer's radio to call for help

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) trooper is being treated at the hospital after having a heat-related medical emergency.

NCSHP confirms the trooper is being treated for heat exhaustion, which happened around 11:30 a.m. while he was on duty Monday

The trooper went into distress while in the parking lot of a gas station on Poor Boy Farm Road at S. Smithfield Road in Knightdale.

According to NCSHP, a customer in the parking lot of that Exxon realized the trooper was having a medical episode and used the officer's radio to call for help. The Telecommunicator who took the call quickly dispatched first responders to the scene.

The trooper is listed in good condition.

Adults older than 65, children younger than four, people with existing medical conditions, and those without access to air conditioning are at the greatest risk on days with high temperatures.

Drinking plenty of water and staying out of the sun are critical cautions to take.



People should also check on their neighbors who may be at high risk and ensure they have access to heat relief and hydration.
