Raleigh police officers responded around 1:45 p.m. to the crash on Wake Forest Road in front of Duke Health Raleigh.
Investigators said it appeared that the driver of a black Subaru Forester was northbound on Wake Forest Road when he lost control of his car and hit multiple vehicles.
The initial crash caused the driver of a blue Honda CR-V to cross into oncoming traffic, where the Honda collided head-on with a red Nissan Altima and a white Dodge Journey.
The Subaru Forester then struck a gray Fiat 500 before sideswiping a blue Hyundai Sonata and coming to a stop.
The driver of the Subaru was taken to WakeMed Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Several additional drivers were hospitalized for what were minor to moderate injuries.
Several of the cars had to be towed away.
The names of the people involved have not been released. Police said the crash was not weather-related.
The roadway has reopened, and the crash remains under investigation.
