Man checking on damage to his car dies after hit by impaired driver; Durham police confirm

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Durham Police Department's Traffic and Crash Team is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that happened early Sept. 13.

Around 2 a.m., officers responded to South Miami Boulevard, where Juan Jose Acevedo Archila, 18, had been involved in a crash that left his vehicle disabled in the roadway.

As Archila exited the vehicle to assess the damage, he was struck by Stephen Moore, 37, of Manson, who was driving a 2010 Nissan Sentra.

Moore told officers he attempted to stop but continued sliding because of rainy conditions. His vehicle struck Archila and the disabled vehicle.

Archila was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.



Moore is charged with:

  • Driving While Impaired

  • Driving with a Revoked License

  • Failure to Reduce Speed

  • Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle

  • Exceeding a Safe Speed and No Liability Insurance
