RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Two passengers were killed in a vehicle crash late Saturday night, Raleigh police said.

Officers responded around 11:02 p.m. Saturday to the 400 block of S. New Hope Road for a reported crash. Investigators said a silver Toyota RAV4 was speeding northbound near Rogers Lane when it ran into the median and hit a small tree.

The impact caused the SUV to slide sideways on the driver's side into a larger tree. Police said the vehicle then struck the tree with its roof, overturned and came to rest in the opposite lanes of S. New Hope Road.

Two passengers died from their injuries.

The driver, identified as 19-year-old Jonathan De Loera Olmos, was taken to a hospital. He has been charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle.

The road remained closed Sunday morning as investigators continued processing the scene. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

The investigation is ongoing.
