Crews were called out around 10:36 p.m., and the first unit arrived just five minutes later. When firefighters got there, they found three damaged vehicles-one of them overturned off the road. The scene was serious enough that responders immediately closed the highway in both directions.
Six people were taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital, including the drivers of all three vehicles and three passengers. Officials haven't released details about their injuries.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says all three vehicles were headed southbound when the crash happened.
According to investigators, a fourth vehicle was headed north and crossed in the path of three vehicles that were going south.
The highway stayed closed for more than two hours while first responders worked the scene and troopers documented the crash. It reopened shortly after 12:30 a.m.
