It happened at 5 a.m. on the 400 block of Weaver Circle in Sharpsburg.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they found 27-year-old Makyah Page and 30-year-old Devonte Ricks suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Vidant Hospital. Page is recovering while Ricks is in critical but stable condition.
Wilson County Sheriff's Office said they were friends of the shooting suspect Daquan Marcato Jones, 32, of Rocky Mount who fled the scene with his 27-year-old girlfriend Kiera Massenburg and their six-year-old child, who was also shot, to a home in Nash County.
The child underwent surgery and is in life-threatening condition.
Nash County Sheriff's Office deputies later found Jones dead with a gunshot wound inside a home on Jamie Road.
Authorities also found the body of Massenburg inside the car Jones was driving when he fled the scene at Weaver Circle. The two had a history of domestic violence while they were together the sheriff's office said.
Sheriff Calvin Woodard released a statement on the shooting:
"An incident like this is disheartening to the community and to the families that will endure this pain for the rest of their lives. This does not make any sense when you see someone who could've taken a second chance in life to change his behavior. His actions have restricted a child from having a chance to enjoy life, play with dolls, go to prom and tell her mother that she loves her every day. Prayers definitely go out to the family as the system needs to work more to protect innocent people from gun violence."
