Driver charged in hit-and-run death of 61-year-old man waiting at Durham bus stop

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham Police have arrested a driver in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 61-year-old man during the weekend.

On Wednesday, DPD said Wilmer Marcotulio Fuentes Mejia, 30, of Durham, had been taken into custody and charged with felony hit and run and an outstanding DWI warrant.

The deadly incident happened just before 10:45 p.m. on Saturday. A pedestrian was standing near the bus stop in the 900 block of Chalk Level Road when he was hit by a car going west on Chalk Level Road.

Investigators determined that the vehicle veered off the road to the left, struck two signs, and then collided with the pedestrian before driving away from the scene.

The pedestrian, Richard Ferguson Jr. of Durham, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.



Police said Saturday that the suspect vehicle was described as possibly an orange Jeep with a hard top, with likely damage to its front end or hood and possibly to the windshield.

The case is still under investigation, DPD said Wednesday.
