Reaction varies in Fayetteville to news of deployment to Middle East

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Up to 1,500 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne are expected to be deployed soon to the Middle East.

The deployment news has upset some people in the Fort Bragg area.

A small group of protesters gathered in downtown Fayetteville and held signs that read "No war for oil."

At the North Carolina Veterans Park, ABC11 met residents reflecting on the lives that have been lost through the decades and the new deployment expected to happen.

"It needs to be done, in my opinion," said Jim Condello.

He is a former Marine and served twice at Camp Lejeune.

The White House has already sent thousands of Marines to the Middle East and ABC News reported that the 82nd Airborne will be joining the effort.

Condello thinks it is the right move.

"We need someone to draw the line and hold Iran accountable for the last 40-some years of what they've been doing. So if this works, this works," said Condello. "I'm not necessarily saying boots on the ground, but what's going on right now needs to be done."

A Raeford resident, who wanted to be identified only as Crystal, said she has several family members who served in the Armed Forces. As a mother, her thoughts are on the soldiers' spouses and loved ones.

"We ain't got no business over there," Crystal said.

She said she understands the anxiety they'll now face and explained her son was deployed to Iraq when he served in the Army.

"It's scary, it's scary. You're doing a lot of praying, staying on your knees (and) just pray for a safe return," she said. "First of all, praying that they don't go because, like I said, they don't have a business over there."
