APEX, N.C. (WTVD) -- Lufkin Road Middle School in Apex dismissed students early Wednesday following a bomb threat made to the school by phone, school officials said. All students and staff were reported safe.

After receiving the threat in the morning, administrators immediately contacted Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Security and local law enforcement. As a precaution, students and staff were evacuated to the school's football field while authorities began a thorough search of the campus.

Law enforcement officials estimated the search would take at least two hours.

Families who wish to pick up their students were asked to bring identification and follow established carpool procedures. Bus riders will be dismissed once carpool pick-up is complete, according to the school.
