In a statement posted to the department's Facebook page, officials said Maurer died after what they called a "long and courageous battle with cancer."
His colleagues highlighted his distinguished service, saying that he most notably represented the agency as its FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force officer, a role that placed him at the center of critical regional and national security work.
The department's message reflects a deep sense of loss, honoring Maurer not only for his investigative skill but for the dedication and integrity he brought to the job.
Detective Maurer is survived by his wife and his daughter.
