Brockman was arrested by the SBI earlier this month for allegedly having an intimate relationship with a minor who is under the age of 15.
Eyewitness News learned today a committee was finalized to explore Brockman's expulsion, but also learned Brockman voluntarily resigned.
Brockman was a Democrat serving his sixth term.
NC House Speaker Destin Hall released the following statement on Brockman's resignation:
"Rep. Brockman's decision to resign is the right thing to do for his constituents and for the North Carolina House of Representatives. His departure spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter."
The NC Democratic Party provided a statement calling on him to resign once the charges were announced.
"The North Carolina Democratic Party is calling on Brockman to immediately resign. The profound seriousness of these criminal charges makes it impossible for him to effectively represent his community."
