74-year-old man charged with attempted murder in Chapel Hill shooting

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened Thursday night.

According to police, officers responded to a shooting call just before 6:15 p.m. and found a person with gunshot wounds near Franklin Street and Graham Street.

The person was taken to UNC Hospitals. Police said the injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.



A suspect was taken into custody, police said.



Late Thursday night, police said Geary Wayne Council, 74, of Chapel Hill, was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, damage to property, discharging firearm in the city, and going armed to the terror of the public.

Council was being held without bond at the Orange County Detention Center. He is set to make a first court appearance at 10 a.m. Friday.

"I want to thank our officers and investigators for their quick response to this incident," said Police Chief Celisa Lehew. "We will continue to investigate and provide support to the victim and all who were impacted."

Police added that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
