RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- North Carolina lawmakers are reacting to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot Wednesday afternoon during a event at Utah Valley University.

The shooter is still at large as of Thursday morning. The Utah Department of Public of Safety said in an update Wednesday night that two people were initially taken into custody after the shooting but later released.

Kirk leaves behind his wife and two children. Reaction has poured in from both sides of the political spectrum.

Governor Josh Stein (D):

"My heart is heavy with sadness from senseless murders - Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, Iryna Zarutska, and Charlie Kirk - and school shootings last month in Minneapolis and today in Colorado. We are grappling with a series of devastating tragedies, one after another. I urge everyone to spend time with loved ones tonight, hold them close, and then come back tomorrow ready to fight for the soul of this nation. We cannot, we will not give up on America."

Former Governor Roy Cooper (D):

"Violence must have no place in our country, and we should all remember our common humanity...I am praying for (Charlie) Kirk's family and loved ones."

Senator Thom Tilis (R):

"Praying for Charlie Kirk. Political violence has no place in our society."

Senator Ted Budd (R):

"There's too much evil in this world. Praying for @charliekirk11, his wife and kids, and the Utah Valley University community."
