Construction starts on new downtown Raleigh Omni Hotel

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Construction has started at the end of Fayetteville Street on the new Omni Hotel, which will be the anchor hotel for the multi-million-dollar Raleigh Convention Center expansion project.

Fences are blocking off the site. Crews and cranes are ripping up a parking lot that sat across the street from the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts.

"We are thrilled to be joining the downtown community in Raleigh and are inspired by its continued economic growth. Omni Hotels & Resorts is committed to providing elevated hospitality experiences which align with this dynamic destination," Omni Hotels & Resorts President Kurt Alexander said in a statement to ABC11. "It is an honor to be entrusted by the City of Raleigh to develop and manage this property while forging unique and authentic connections with the local community."

A spokesperson confirmed that Bob's Steak & Chop House and a coffee shop will be inside the hotel.

City leaders hope the hotel and expanded Convention Center will attract larger events and bigger names at Red Hat Amphitheater.

Some Raleigh residents told ABC11 that they would love to catch a show there, but usually travel to other cities to attend a concert.

"I know sometimes large artists will miss Raleigh and go to the Charlotte or the Atlanta," said Madison Paul.

Kristen DiAngelo added, "I would go. I love outdoor concerts."

The owners of Element Gastropub are happy the Omni is coming to the City of Oaks and believe it could draw in more people.

Carey Kidd said there were fewer events at Red Hat last year, and it led to a 30% drop in sales.

"The Omni is a pretty prestigious brand to bring to a city," he said. "We're excited to have it right down the street because that really helps Raleigh look more elevated."

The Omni expects the work here to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2028.
