Joshua Runkles, 42, was arrested after allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer and bringing a weapon to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where the memorial service is taking place Sunday.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, he faces charges of carrying a weapon into a prohibited place and impersonating a police officer.
Runkles's residential address is listed in the town of Cameron, according to court documents obtained by ABC11 Eyewitness News.
Authorities say Runkles exhibited "suspicious behavior" at the stadium, prompting an approach by Secret Service agents. During the encounter, he claimed to be a member of law enforcement and stated that he was armed, according to a Secret Service spokesperson. However, he was not an authorized law enforcement officer working the event, and an investigation is ongoing to determine his intent and purpose for being at the stadium.
Later, in a statement posted on X, Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet said the individual "was doing advance security for a known guest planning to attend the memorial service tomorrow. We do not believe this person was attempting anything nefarious, however the advance was not done in proper coordination with the TPUSA security team or US Secret Service."
Runkles has since been released on bond, according to Arizona DPS.
