19-year-old driver faces charges after passenger dies in Durham Freeway crash, police say

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Durham Police Department (DPD) is charging a 19-year-old driver after a crash turned deadly early Saturday morning on the Durham Freeway.

The crash happened around 4:00 a.m. at Exit 3B on the northbound side of Highway 147, also known as the Durham Freeway. According to DPD, the driver, identified as Samuel Salinas-Salinas, was speeding on the freeway and swerved to avoid hitting a driver who was preparing to take Exit 3B. Salinas-Salinas' Suburban collided with the other driver's Ford F-150 truck. Salinas then lost control of the SUV, hit a guardrail, which caused his vehicle to flip numerous times.

A passenger in Salinas's SUV was ejected and later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Durham police. They identified the passenger as 18-year-old Josh Aldolfo Rodriguez-Higinio, of Asheboro.

Samuel Salinas-Salinas is charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and driving after consuming while being under the age of 21.

No information was released on the driver of the pickup.
