CREEDMOOR, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Creedmoor Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to remove the mayor's authority following his most recent criminal charges.

Under the vote, Mayor Antwane Terrill Downey will no longer be allowed to speak on behalf of the city, use a city email account or access City Hall outside of official meetings or scheduled appointments.

The action comes about two months after Downey was charged with his fifth driving while impaired offense in seven years.

According to charging documents, Downey, 43, was driving south on U.S. 15 near State Road 1635 in Granville County on Feb. 16 when he crossed the center line, left the roadway and struck a ditch and a tree.

He was charged with driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
