The fire began just before 2 p.m. on West Danville Street.
The South Hill Police Department said the fire was contained around 8 p.m. Police added that there was a large amount of run-off from the fire going into area creeks. The levels were non-hazardous but did have a strong smell, police said.
On Sunday, just before 12:30 p.m., the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department said crews were wrapping up operations and were "completely exhausted."
Cleanup from the fire will take weeks.
The fire department said all utilities have been restored and residents were allowed to return home.
