Following a months-long investigation, Wake County Sheriff's Office identified a woman allegedly responsible for stealing victims' identities to assist in creating fraudulent Duke Energy accounts.
On Thursday, investigators arrested arrested Dazmyn Person, 39, and charged her with nine counts of exploitation of an older adult or disabled adult from a position of trust, nine counts of identity theft, one count of felony conspiracy, and one count of trafficking stolen identities.
"The months-long investigative work by WCSO investigators demonstrates our commitment and determination to resolve this case and ensure those responsible are held accountable," Sheriff Willie Rowe said in a news release. "We will continue to work to safeguard the residents and businesses in Wake County."
In July 2025, Duke Energy representative contacted Wake County Sheriff's Office for assistance. Several accounts were opened in the names of living and deceased customers without their knowledge, totaling $495,904.62 in losses for the energy company.
In October 2025, Wake County man Rafael Stefan Williams, 36, was arrested in connection to the case. He is being held at the Wake County Detention Center.
