CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- An investigation is underway after a Cumberland County deputy shot a person on Tuesday, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) said.

The SBI said the incident happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of Camden Road, a Fayetteville address in the Hope Mills area. The sheriff's office said deputies responded to a domestic call.

When deputies got there, they came across a person with a knife. The deputy instructed the suspect to drop the knife, but the person lunged toward the deputy with the knife, CCSO said.

A Cumberland County sheriff's vehicle is seen in the area where the deputy-involved shooting happened Tuesday.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office has requested the assistance of the SBI to investigate, as is standard when a law officer discharges a service weapon. The state agency was at the scene Tuesday night, along with the sheriff's office and Hope Mills Police.

The deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.

There is no ongoing threat to the public, CCSO said.
