RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- After years of delays, construction on the Downtown South project in Raleigh could finally begin by the end of 2026.

Developer John Kane confirmed the news to Eyewitness News on Thursday. The multi-billion-dollar development, planned for the area south of downtown at South Saunders and I-40, is set to feature a 12,000 to 15,000-seat soccer stadium.

The stadium is a joint effort with businessman Steve Malik, owner of the Carolina Courage women's soccer team. The first phase of the project would also include retail and office space.

However, there's still a big challenge ahead -- Kane Realty and Malik are working to secure financing and are hoping to team up with the City of Raleigh and Wake County to make it happen.
