The university announced on Sunday night that Interim President Dr. Marcus Burgess was leaving. The news dropped on his final day, Aug. 31, although the post says he told them in July.
"The Board of Trustees of Saint Augustine's University announces that Dr. Marcus H. Burgess has resigned as Interim President of the University. His resignation, submitted for personal reasons on July 16, took effect today, August 31, 2025, marking his final day with the University. We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Burgess for his leadership and service during a pivotal period in the University's history. His commitment and dedication to the mission of Saint Augustine's University have been deeply valued."
The university announced Burgess' appointment as interim president in December 2023. At the time, it said the institution believed he had many resources to bring to SAU, namely, resources that would help SAU in its appeal to the university's accreditation organization.
The university thanked Burgess for his leadership and announced that Provost Dr. Verjanis Peoples has assumed administrative responsibilities until further notice.
"This musical chairs has got to stop," said Save SAU Coalition Chairman Benjamin Johnson.
The calls for transparency from the university continue from alumni.
"As these leadership positions have changed. We need qualifications. We need to know what was the reason they were selected. We don't know those answers," said Johnson.
ABC11 saw no students on campus Tuesday, which was the first day of classes. Through the years, the HBCU has found itself in trouble, including ongoing accreditation challenges, payroll issues, low student enrollment, and now Burgess' resignation.
Alumni believe there is more to the story behind Burgess' resignation.
"I do believe a part of him did not want to leave," said alumnus Steven Williams. "He said it numerous times. He said it in the media and to alumni. That was his theme. I'm going to save this university."
In a statement, the board of trustees said it remains steadfast in its commitment to the university. However, some alumni are calling for the board to resign.

"We have partners. We have people that are willing to help us save the institution, but it comes with you, as board members, to move away and step down from your positions. So, please help us save this legacy," said Williams.
ABC11 News asked the university why Burgess resigned and how large the student population is this school year. St. Aug's has not responded.
