RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A driver has been charged after a pedestrian was hit and killed early Monday morning, Raleigh Police said.

Officers responded at 3:26 a.m. to a crash at the top of the South Wilmington Street bridge that crosses over South Saunders Street.

A man was walking on the right shoulder of South Wilmington Street when he was hit by a car. The impact sent the pedestrian over the bridge onto South Saunders Street, where he was subsequently hit by several other cars. The pedestrian, 59-year-old Robert Jackson Henderson, died from his injuries.

The suspect vehicle, a blue Honda CR-V, then struck the wall, sustaining heavy front-end damage. The driver left the car on top of the bridge in the roadway and fled on foot.

Police later identified the suspect and took him into custody.

Chandler Evan Brown, 22, was charged with felony hit/run death, felony death by vehicle, DWI, failure to maintain lane control, and failure to reduce speed.

Both South Saunders Street and South Wilmington Street were closed for several hours throughout the morning. The crash remains an ongoing investigation.
