Durham County commissioners to discuss budget as school employees push for raises

Updated 2 hours ago
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Durham County Board of Commissioners is meeting Thursday morning to discuss a proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, as some Durham Public Schools employees say the plan does not include funding for raises they were promised.

At this point, commissioners had not yet begun discussion on the proposed teacher and staff raises during the meeting.

Earlier this week, a number of school district employees packed commission chambers, calling for the county to fund pay increases. The proposed raise would bring classified workers' pay to $19.22 an hour -- more than a $2 increase from the district's current minimum wage, according to DPS employees.

Those workers say the budget currently under consideration by county leaders does not include funding for those raises.

This marks the first time commissioners are discussing next year's budget since that packed meeting earlier this week.

County leaders have said both property tax and sales tax revenue are down, which could impact spending decisions. Commissioners face a deadline of June 8 to pass a budget.
