Durham County ends Pride sponsorship: LGBTQ Center of Durham

Monday, September 22, 2025
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The LGBTQ Center of Durham is expecting at least 15,000 people to attend this weekend's Pride event in Downtown Durham.

The gathering marks a milestone and leaders say support is needed more than ever.

"We know that just showing up and being is in itself an act of radical resistance," said LGBTQ Center of Durham Interim Co-Executive Director Vanity Reid-Deterville.

The Center is celebrating 10 years of operation next month.

Different for the 2025 Pride event, the center says Durham County is opting out of being a headlining sponsor of Pride.

"It's a very nuanced, very difficult situation. It is a fact of reality," said Deterville.

ABC11 reached out to Durham County for comment on the decision and has not received a response.

We also tried to speak with Durham County Commission Chair Nida Allm, but have not received a response.

Deterville says she understands that municipalities may be making changes due to the current political environment.

"We have to be very realistic about the pressures that many sectors of society right now are experiencing as a result of their support. There are streams of financial stability. it's all being jeopardized," she said. "It's having a lasting impact, and we haven't completely seen all of the fallout of these executive decisions."

The LGBTQ Center says the City of Durham remains committed to the event.

Durham Pride will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be a march and a festival.
