Calling it a "disaster," Police Chief Kem Braden originally told ABC11 that four people in total were shot. FPD later clarified that "multiple" were shot.
All the victims were shot at about 8:45 p.m. in the 200 block of Lieber Street. One victim made his way to Powers Swain Chevrolet at 4709 Bragg Blvd., and a third victim wound up in the 1600 block of Tryon Drive.
Despite what the police chief said earlier, an FPD spokesman later told ABC11 that he could not confirm the total number of victims shot. With a fluid situation, details can change "quickly."
The victims were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where police said 21-year-old Isreal Chambliss was pronounced dead.
Braden said the shootings happened between two groups of people. FPD said Wednesday that those involved arranged to meet at the location before the gunfire broke out.
At first, police thought the shootings happened at three locations. Investigators did recover weapons connected to the case on Bragg Boulevard.
The conditions of the other gunshot victims were not immediately known.
Police are actively investigating but said Wednesday there were no suspects believed to be at large and there was no known threat to the community.
Even so, organizers working on mitigating violence in the city said this was another incident that could have a long-term effect on their efforts to make the community safer.
"I was actually shocked," said Elizabeth Williams, CEO of Trendsetting Trendz.
As a community advocate, Williams does anti-violence outreach with young people in Fayetteville to help mitigate violence.
"I was like, man, now we've got to get back to it and see what's, what is the cause? What is it that we have to do to try to shift that?" Williams said after the triple shooting.
She lost her own partner to violence in Fayetteville and expressed solidarity with the families affected by this incident.
"I just want everyone to know that even if you go through certain things you can persevere, you can push forward," she said.
