Suspect on the run after Fayetteville shooting involving police, crash into home

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Detectives in Fayetteville are working to piece together what led to a shooting involving an officer late Tuesday.

Authorities said it began just before 11:30 p.m. when officers spotted a stolen car along Country Club Drive near Murchison Road. When they tried to pull the car over, the driver didn't stop and led officers into a neighborhood off Frost Drive.

According to investigators, the driver initially stopped on a neighborhood street. But as officers got out and approached on foot, the situation quickly escalated.

Police say the driver suddenly accelerated car while officers were nearby, hitting several objects in the process. During that encounter, two officers fired their weapons.

The driver did not stop. Instead, officers say the suspect kept going deeper into the neighborhood before crashing, causing significant damage to nearby residence. After the crash, the driver got out and ran off.

Officers spent hours searching for the suspect overnight and into Wednesday, using K9 units and aviation support to comb the area. Police say part of the effort is to find the driver and check on whether they may have been hurt during the shooting or crash.

As of now, the suspect has not been found.

No officers were injured, and it's still unclear whether the driver was hurt.

Following department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Police are now asking for the public's help. Investigators are encouraging people in the areas around Frost Drive, Hastings Drive, and Country Club Drive to check any home surveillance cameras, including Ring or Nest systems, for footage from around the time of the incident.
