Chopper 11 was over the scene as visible flames and thick, black smoke shot through the roof while fire crews worked to control the blaze.
It happened in a neighborhood near Strickland Lane and Keith Hills Road.
Several Buies Creek fire trucks responded, along with Harnett County EMS and the Sheriff's Office.
Officers at the scene described hearing ammunition exploding inside the burning home.
Firefighters on ladders and on the ground worked from different angles to get control of the intense fire.
A long-time neighborhood resident said he heard a loud bang and went outside to see what happened. The neighbor said he spoke with a man who lives in the home that went up in flames, who said everyone got out safely, though some suffered smoke inhalation.
"I was in the house. I just heard a loud bang of some sort, and I heard his car then, and a few minutes later, his car racing down the road with no words," said neighbor Fred Genet. "I just came out of it, looked outside. I saw all the smoke billowing up out of the house down there, and I knew which house it was. And I walked out here, and I saw the fire trucks started rolling about that time."
At 7:30 p.m., firefighters were still at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains unclear.
An ABC11 breaking news crew reached out to the Buies Creek fire chief but has not yet heard back.
