Local real estate agents say the Triangle region is faring better than many parts of the country despite the national increase.
"We have a lot more housing equity, we're still strong in employment, we still have positive population growth," said Realtor Erica Sizemore.
A deeper analysis by ABC News and ABC-owned television stations shows several ZIP Codes in the viewing area have some of the highest foreclosure rates in North Carolina.
In ZIP Codes beginning with 275, there were more than 5,400 foreclosures between 2020 and 2025, with nearly 36% of affected homeowners identified as ethnic minorities.
Just south of that area, ZIP Codes starting with 283 saw more than 7,000 foreclosures during the same period, with 44% of affected homeowners identified as ethnic minorities.
Sizemore said higher foreclosure numbers in those parts of the state stem from greater housing inventory, but emphasized that overall levels remain relatively low, averaging about 200 foreclosures a year.
"It's really not a high representation. We're coming back to a normalized period from pre-pandemic, but we're certainly not in a pandemic-era scare," said Sizemore.
The findings suggest that while foreclosures are rising, the region's housing market continues to stabilize compared with pandemic-era volatility.
