Whitaker, best known for his roles on "Family Affair," and soap operas such as "General Hospital," joins the Judson Theatre Company in Pinehurst.
On Thursday night, they opened the stage play in the Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College. The play is an adaptation of Harper Lee's 1960s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It explores race and justice in a fictional Alabama town, circa the 1930s.
Whitaker dropped by the Fayetteville Eyewitness News Center earlier in the week to talk about a relevant message the novel still carries in 2014.
"I think we need to realize that everybody has a right to exist and to have their voices be heard, no matter if they're addicts, if they're black, if they're white, if they're poor, if they're rich," Whitaker said. " And that's you know, what the play kind of has - the rich and the poor and the black and the white, and how we need to be loving of everybody."
"To Kill a Mockingbird" runs through Sunday in Pinehurst. Play and ticket Information can be found here: http://judsontheatre.com/.
