DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The former leader of one of the most powerful political organizations in North Carolina is facing felony charges.

Cassandra Stokes, the former chair of the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People, has been indicted on embezzlement charges for allegedly misappropriating nearly $75,000 from the nonprofit.

Prosecutors allege that Stokes wrote checks to herself and to cash, made unauthorized ATM withdrawals, and used the Political Action Committee's debit card for personal expenses.

The chairman of the group, Floyd McKissick Jr., put out a statement on Monday, saying, in part, "The Durham Committee is grateful for the investigation that has resulted in these charges being brought, and it looks forward to the judicial outcome of this case."

Meanwhile, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) also released a statement that said, in part, "This investigation is ongoing, and the SBI will continue to work closely with the Durham County District Attorney's Office on this case."

ABC11 reached out to Stokes for comment but has not heard back.
