Gas prices eating away at profits for delivery drivers and truckers

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Walter Colvin is retired but back on the road again. He picked up another gig to pay for his future vacations.

"If someone asks me about extra income, I recommend DoorDash," said Colvin.

He's been working as a DoorDash driver for the last four years. But now, the money isn't adding up as much as it did just a month ago.

"If we don't get a good tip for DoorDash and it's not really worth the DoorDash now with the current prices of gas today," he said.

Gas prices are taking a big piece of his pie.

A month ago, he was paying just over $60 to fill up. Now, it's $90.

"Our profit has been reduced to at least 25% of what we're used to make," said Colvin.

The national average for gas is $3.79.

In North Carolina, drivers are paying $3.55.

And for diesel, it's now $5.05.

"It's tough. It's a tough business," said Lawrence Carpenter.

He owns C-Tran Trucking, hauling and dumping heavy loads, like rocks and sand, all across the Triangle.

Carpenter is watching gas prices and his gas gauge, wondering how it jumped so high, so fast.

"Right now, you're just trying to just make sense of all this," said Carpenter.

He's trying to understand why he's paying $100 more for diesel per dump truck.

Each of his eight trucks now averages about $350 worth of diesel a day.

" At the end of the day, if you don't move, you don't make money," said Carpenter. "You can't control the weather, and you can't control the gas prices. You keep fighting."

Carpenter said he'll keep trucking along, waiting for relief. As for Colvin, he's not ready for a second retirement. They both are waiting it out, hoping gas prices will make a U-turn.
