'It was contained': Residents, businesses react to Glenwood South weekend shooting

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Downtown Raleigh Alliance has significantly increased security measures along Glenwood South and extra patrols started in late 2023 in an effort to curb crime.

Residents say there's been a big difference, but then this weekend there was a shooting.

Shirley Stancil, who lives in the area, saw the commotion after the incident early Sunday morning.

"I heard the sirens and everything like that," she said.

Raleigh Police say a fight broke out and an innocent bystander was hurt.

Three people were arrested and charged with 'inciting a riot.'

Stancil has lived at Glenwood Towers for about seven years and says the shooting was unfortunate.

"It happened, but it was contained and that was a good thing because you can't control everything," said Stancil.

There's been a concerted effort along Glenwood South to make the entertainment center safer for everyone.

In addition to added security on the street level, many businesses have security inside their establishments.

"We do create a good, safe environment, not only just for our staff, but the community as well," said Smash Social Club Front of House Manager Maranda Ali.

Smash just opened their doors December 1st and it experienced one of its busiest days this past Saturday.

Sales were up more than 50% as folks came by to catch games, grab a bite to eat or have a few cocktails.

"To have that kind of sales for this weekend, (it) was really nice for sure," said Ali.

Stancil says overall, things are better here now than a few years ago and she appreciates the changes.

"I thank god for the police presence," she said. "I think that helps encourage the people that come down here to be more cautious, to be more careful."

Eyewitness News is working to obtain data from Raleigh Police to see if the number of incidents has improved from this time last year.

We're being told the victim of this shooting's weekend has non-life-threatening injuries.
