STATESVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- ABC11 has obtained 911 calls from the plane crash in Statesville that killed seven people, including NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their two young children.

The crash happened in December. The Cessna Citation hit the ground short of the runway at Statesville Regional Airport and then burst into flames.

In the newly released dispatch calls, eyewitnesses can be heard describing the moments after the crash.

"I'm at Lakewood Golf Course right now, and we just had a plane fly over our heads and crash into the tree line and a huge explosion near the runway out there," a 911 caller told dispatch.

Federal investigators have said they have a good idea about who was sitting in the left seat in the cockpit but want to confirm that detail before releasing it publicly.

The cause of the crash and why the plane was attempting an emergency landing remain unknown.

Early findings are expected to be released in a month or two, and investigators will, of course, look at maintenance records.
