The Benson Fire Department responded to the 700 block of Hodges Chapel Road in the Banner Fire District for a reported crash.
When crews arrived, they found a minivan on its side in a cemetery, fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly began putting out the fire.
Officials said no one was found in or around the vehicle.
Emergency crews later located six people, ranging in age from 16 to 22, in a church parking lot nearby. Five of them were taken to hospitals for treatment. The sixth person was evaluated on scene and released to a parent.
According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the vehicle was traveling east on Hodges Chapel Road when the driver ran off the right side of the road near a curve, overcorrected and crossed the center line before leaving the roadway on the left.
Troopers said the minivan entered a ditch, struck a culvert and then hit a chain fence and cemetery posts. Investigators say the vehicle also struck a headstone before overturning multiple times and coming to rest on its side.
Authorities said the occupants were able to get out of the vehicle before it caught fire.
Trooper Martinez with the NCSHP is investigating the crash. Charges against the driver are pending.
The crash remains under investigation.
