According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and Buncombe County Health and Human Services, the person was in Asheville while contagious.
Anyone who was at the Holiday Inn Express at 435 Smokey Park Highway in Asheville between 1 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 26 may have been exposed to measles and should monitor for symptoms through Sept. 16.
Health officials said the hotel is cooperating with local public health authorities to notify guests and staff of the potential exposure.
Anyone who develops symptoms should contact their local health department immediately and stay home unless seeking medical care. Officials also recommend calling ahead before visiting a doctor's office or emergency room to help prevent exposing others.
Public health officials are urging all unvaccinated people ages 1 and older to get vaccinated against measles to protect themselves and those around them. The state's measles immunity checker tool is available for people who are unsure whether they are protected against the virus.
