The run moved through downtown Raleigh, with officers making their way toward the State Capitol for the final leg of the statewide relay.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers from Wake County agencies -- including Apex police and Wake Forest police -- joined participants from across North Carolina. Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce was also among those taking part.
The Flame of Hope Run is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which supports Special Olympics North Carolina. Friday's segment featured a 5-mile route through downtown Raleigh, ending at the State Capitol.
Organizers say the event continues to grow each year. Last year, there was 300 runners and this year, it's about 500.
"It's amazing," said Dan Look of the Fuquay-Varina Police Department. "We don't do it for us. We do it for the athletes. Every year, we we get together, and we grow as a state and agencies to come together for these athletes."
Aerial footage showed runners traveling along Hillsborough Street as they neared the finish.
The torch carried during the run will be used to light the cauldron at Friday's opening ceremony, marking the start of the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games.
