SELMA, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Town of Selma has named a new police chief.

Selma native Justin Vause will serve in the role.

"Selma is home to me in every sense of the word," Vause told the Johnston County Report. "The people here helped shape who I am, and I don't take that lightly. It means something to be able to give back and serve this community in this way."

Vause has nearly two decades of experience in public safety.

"We're going to treat people the right way," Vause said. "We're going to do our jobs professionally, hold ourselves accountable, and approach every situation with fairness and compassion. That's what this community deserves."

Vause said he plans to strengthen the department from within, including improving recruitment and retention and continuing to modernize operations.

"This town has given a lot to me," he said. "Now it's my turn to give back -- to lead, to serve, and to do everything I can to help keep Selma safe and strong."

Vause succeeds former Chief Jamie Hughes, who retired on April 1.
